Awareness: the Foundation of Change

New Year s Eve resolutions are often dropped shortly after they are begun. Even on those rare occasions when they are seen through to their completion, there often seems to be something lacking. A feeling of total fulfillment is rarely achieved. To make deep and lasting change that leads to fulfillment, one must work a bit and search for the real underlying issue that drives the superficial wants. This fundamental issue will then guide the change process and result in solutions, which substantially transform the individual or group.

The process of change consists of an awareness of the issue that needs resolution, a decision to carry out a chosen plan of action, and the consistency to follow through with the steps to attain the outcome. On the most basic level, the process entails finding out what one most needs to change. Oftentimes, this vital investigation is only superficially addressed.

Take for example the desires, I want to make more money at my job or the company needs to increase its productivity. These are common goals. However, what are not usually investigated are deeper underlying needs that are resulting in these desired goals. These unmet needs are what truly drive the desires. The wish for more money could be the result of desiring the ability to buy new things. But, on a deeper level, it could also be the desire for more freedom, like time to spend with one s family. Perhaps the present job where one is employed does not support such meaningful interactions with the family and a new job, rather than a raise is needed. The need to increase company productivity could be a symptom of a deep-seated need to reexamine outmoded business practices. Maybe an entirely new direction by the company would better serve the growth and evolution of the organization rather than carrying on in the traditional manner.

Cultivating such awareness is not effortless, but the deeper one explores, the more apparent the plan of action becomes. The solution of an issue often becomes obvious once a clear deep understanding of the issue is achieved. This revelation will often feel like the next logical step that needs to be taken. Those steps will develop into a plan, which will ultimately lead to attainment of the real goal. Changing jobs and business directions are major deviations that are not taken lightly. But if the need and urgency are great enough, a conscious decision can be made and the work can begin towards planning for those transformations.

Lastly in the change process, is consistency and follow through. No one will make lasting change in their lives with just a few days of new behaviors or procedures. This is another reason why New Year s resolutions often fail. Research suggests that one must regularly perform new actions every day for 21 days in order for it to become a habit. It often takes 3 to 6 months for one s life to adjust to such changes. Major life or business transformations could take several years to completely resolve. Thankfully, the deep clear awareness of the problem which presented the plan of action, also provides the motivation for carrying on. When one is conscious of the real need behind the change, continued attention on the problem offers inspiration and drive to continue.

How does one effect this type of change? Firstly, one must observe their situation with a new perspective. Release all preconceptions and mental models. Then, reflect on the situation from this new point of view and allow the next-level of understanding to emerge. Finally, act from this new level of understanding and proceed naturally along the presented course of action. So, allow your point of view to expand; realize what will really satisfy your needs; and begin to create the life your desire.
