Iron Will
Last year our oldest son graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Ga. On graduation day approximately one and forty soldiers made their final qualifying jump and received their jump wings. Just over two hundred started Airborne training and somewhere along the way of the three week course, over sixty quit. Every one that begins jump school has to meet rigorous physical standards before they can even begin. Why did the sixty give up? Lack of an iron will.

In His earthly ministry Jesus faced opposition from every side. The Pharisees set traps to discredit Him and plotted to kill Him. His disciples tried to rewrite His agenda and His family questioned His loyalty. Friends that He grew up with became offended and refused to believe in Him. Satan temped Him with the world.
How did He overcome?
“I have come down from Heaven not to do my will but to do the will of the one who sent me” Jn 6:38 NIV
Nothing distracted Him from His purpose. Not growing popularity, not winning debates with the religious or banquets with big shots. He focused on His message and tailored every conversation to whom He was speaking. He was fresh and relevant. To the hurting He spoke of hope. To the blind He spoke of light. At death He spoke of life and to the Leper He gave him a touch.
He knew how to spend His time. He hung out with the poor, not the complacent. He wasn’t distracted by complaints that His message was to hard to understand or when people left Him in droves. He was determined to duplicate Himself through His disciples. He was on a mission that included a Cross. Where our ‘Mission “ begins. If you like me have wanted to quit, let us as the writer of Hebrews enjoins us,”…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…”
