His back was out for a while, and immediately after that, he got some rain rot up on his back. It's mostly cleared up, but I don't know if it'll still be sore up there..?
It probably won't. You can start riding him again, but may I suggest you use an extra fluffy saddle pad so that the saddle does not rub and irritate his rain rot? If it is in it's late stages of clearing up, it most likely will be more ugly than painful. Asking your vet would be the best course of action as they know the horse and the problem the best.
Run your hands along his spine. Does he get ouchy when you apply pressure? That will tell you when he's ready.
If he shys away from your hands when you put them on his back, then no. If he is okay, then he is fine. Rain rot should not make them sore at all, unless it was really really bad. Just put some pressure on his back, if it hurts him, then wiat until you can do that w/o him getting hurt. How long was he out? I usually 'feel' my pony before I ride every day. Usually they'll twitch or look at you or their ears will go back if they have pain. Apply some pressure, but not too much. If you're going to start riding him again, you probably know this, but don't go too hard. Start with just walk and trotting and then work your way up to cantering/jumping (?) If you work him too much one day and then don't ride that hard for another week, chances are he'll be sore.
How long has it been? My horse hurt a her back a few months age adn i couldn't ride for about 2 weeks. If you touch his back and he dips he's probably still hurt. it also depends on how serious it is. My horse was pretty bad she laid down a lot because her back hurt she never lays down.
