Okay, I finally came up with a topic suitable for posting... Looking for any insight any of you can offer re using Vitamin E on scars.
Last spring when I was running in the BridgeRun (CHS), I did a total face plant and as a result most of my right leg came out of it looking like raw meat. The scars on my shin aren't quite as noticeable anymore, but the scarring on my thigh is still pretty bad.
I've always hear that Vitamin E was good for scars, but never knew anyone who's had any direct experience. Also, is it too late? Seeing the comments about scarring on Jen's thread re shingles made me think of this.
Thanks!
I just read an article (don't remember where, sorry!) that said Vitamin E had absolutely no effect on scars. I used it on my scars after shoulder surgeries and have to say, I don't think it really helped. I was later given a compound that a pharmacist made that was effective somewhat on the scars (don't know the name of the compound). I have been using Mederma on the scars recently, and even being old scars (over a year on one side, and over three years on the other) and have seen a slight improvement in a short time.
I would skip the Vitamin E and buy Mederma. Wal-Greens has their own version which is twice the size for the same money and seems to work basically the same.
I've talked to people who have said VitE does help (or did for them), but I just read recently (either LATimes, Health or Prevention) that you need to use it when the scar is still pink rather than turned to white for it to be effective. And it's not going to make the scar go away, but will lessen the effect. Showing Our Scars:: Showing Our Scars is a site supporting individuals and families dealing with the hardships of self injury. Mederma really does work, but you have to give it time. Good luck!
Thanks! I figured it's too late for the remaining scars on my shin, but unless you look closely at my legs when they're tanned (and I don't get a lot of that), it's not too noticeable unless you know to look for it. My thigh, however, looks like a permanent bruise, although sort of brown in color...was hoping to do something for that. I'll try the Mederma-type stuff...worst case is that I buy it and it doesn't work! (Good thing I don't wear short shorts...and we won't even get into the fact that I don't have the thighs for it anyway! ;o) Thanks again!
