  • I am trying to get my 50 pound dog to ARUBA without putting her in the cargo or freight area. Is there anyway to either: (1) get an inexpensive flight from Miami to Aruba that allows dogs in the main cabin or first class cabin OR (2) any cruise ships that allow dogs in the rooms that go from Miami to Aruba?

  • Hi greg, Poor Marley! I've been following your questions regarding getting from Boston to Aruba with your wonderful Polish Sheep Dog and see that you've been able to make arrangements from Boston to Miami, but need to do the final leg of your trip to Aruba. Here are my findings. You can take Marley on one cruise line however, the accomodations are not going to be in your room. Dogs are are required to stay in a limited number of kennels that can hold up to about a mid-size dog. The size of the kennel is: 33"x33"x29" which will be adequate. There are 12 kennels, so reservations are limited. The good news is you are permitted visting hours with your pet. And the pets are exercised daily. The visiting hours are a total of 6 hours and you are generally permitted to make arrangements for more hours with the attendant. All details on cruise ship travel are provided below. Another option is traveling by charter boat from Miami to Aruba. If you choose this mode of travel be sure to have a lifejacket specifically for Marley. PMYachts goes to Aruba http://pmyachts.com/main.html call us: (401) 849-9242 In addition, American Airlines (going from Miami to Aruba) allows pets onboard IF the pet is small and can be stored underneath your feet. This won't be possible with Marley due to the size of the underneath space which only allows a carry on kennel 23"long X 13" wide X 9"H. Pets are also not permitted to travel in extreme heat from May through September 15th. I spoke directly with American Airlines regarding Marley, asking if it would be 'inhumane' to put the dog in the pressurized cabin. This is strictly your choice not to do so, but people do this all the time. Pets are last on the plane and first taken out. The charge is $80 one way. http://www.americanairlines.com Reservations: 800-433-7300 Daily direct Flights to Aruba from Miami, JFK New York, and San Juan =============================================================================== No matter what you choose to do, please be aware that when going to the Carribean you'll need certain documents: http://www.dogfriendly.com/server/travel/info/customs/travelcustoms.shtml#carribean Carribean - Aruba "We still need to confirm this policy which states: Valid Rabies & Health Certificate required. US and Canadian citizens can visit with proof of citizenship, such as a photo ID and a birth certificate. Most other nationalities require just a passport. A roundtrip or onward ticket is required of all visitors." [edit] Getting There & Away "Most visitors arrive on charter flights from the US and Canada, but if you're traveling independently, American Airlines and Aruba Airlines have flights between the island and New York and Miami." =============================================================================== Aruba has airlines which come and go from areas in the US. Each one has specific guidelines on pet travel. I wasn't able to contact each directly by phone, however the information is available to you if you make the contact. With the exception of service animals, no major cruise ships allow dogs in the cabin with people. However, Cunard's transatlantic QE2 allows small dogs in the ship's kennels (dogs are not allowed in the cabin). The dog must be fairly small as the kennels are only 33"x33"x29". The kennel has visiting hours three times per day." =============================================================================== Pets On The Go http://www.petsonthego.com/transcruischrtr.html#anchor "We are often asked about which cruise lines and charter outfits accept pets. The answer is simple there really aren't any cruise ships that permit pets, but there are a number of charter outfits and small sightseeing companies that do welcome well-behaved, sea-worthy pets. The following is an overview of their policies and restrictions. While there is one cruise line that will tolerate pets, there are many reasons that cruise lines cannot accept them. Most of the countries the cruise ships visit have strict quarantine or entry requirements for pets. Secondly, cruise ships generally have very strict health codes to follow as well as poor accommodation configurations for pets separate areas where pets can exercise, relieve themselves, etc. The only cruise line that accepts pets is Cunard's QE2; however, they do so on a very limited basis. Before you leap at the chance to cruise with your pet, you might want to read the fine print. This following is the official word from the cruise line: The QE2 only accepts pets on transatlantic crossings, but not on the first or last Transatlantic crossing of the year. 1. The kennel is located mid-ship on the Sun Deck. 2. There are 12 kennels (two levels of six). 3. Kennels can be used for cats, dogs and other small animals. It is NOT normal procedure to put more than one animal in a kennel, but it would be the responsibility of the owner if they insisted. 4. Food is provided and the kennel attendant can prepare any special requirements. 5. The shielded open-deck area, fitted with a lamppost and a fire hydrant, is available to exercise pets. Animals are not permitted on any other open deck, public area or stateroom. 6. Prior to sailing, necessary documentation must be presented to the ship before livestock can travel. 7. Passengers may provide own bed/bedding for their pets. 8. Pets are kept in the kennel during the crossing and regularly exercised. Visiting Hours: The kennel's visiting hours is as follows, however with prior arrangement it is possible for the attendant to be in the kennels outside of these hours to open the cage: 7:30 AM - 9:30 a.m. 11:00 AM - 12:00 p.m. 3:30 PM - 6:30 p.m." =============================================================================== Finally, hiring a private charter plane is also an option, however the cost is quite extreme. =============================================================================== Google search: miami to aruba medium sized dog cruise line travel with dog by plane phone calls made to airline personal experience traveling with my Afghan Hound Chicago to Pittsburgh by plane More pet travel information at the following Google Answers sites: http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=237193 http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=217492 =============================================================================== Best regards, tlspiegel
