777 on the outbound. SEA - ICN 747 on the way back. ICN - SFO
On the way back, I'll try for upstairs row 11.
What about on the 777? First Row? Too close to the wall? Side or middle aisle?

ICN - PVG has 747 service too, So you can get the sleeper seat even though it is very short flight.
For your refference OZ has 767 as well for ICN-PVG.

so I tried to get the seats that you had mentioned, but Asiana mentioned that bulkhead etc. where airport checkin only. Has this also been your experience?
also another Asiana agent mentioned that she only sees the business class seats although there are first class seats on the plane. when i tried to mention that there may not be first class fares for that market, there ended up some confusion.
so is that also the case of airport check-in to request row 1-3?

They normally block those seats and they release it at airport.
But as a top tier of their member, I always got those seat in advance.

If your flight, ICN-HKG is OZ as well and 747(OZ has 747 and 767 for this route), please make sure to ask front cabin row 1-3. Those are 180 degree sleeper seats. Those seats are far better than upper deck row 11 seats.
They do not sell first class for this route, so C class pesenger can access to those seats.

One more thing, OZ 777 for ICN-SFO, there is no row 11 as a C class.
It only has 6 rows for C class as their usual 777 C class.

I will give you one more tip that may help
Their web site(http://us.flyasiana.com) has i check in service.
Last time I got C+ seat for ICN-BKK through i check in service.
You should have PNR# & their FF# to do it, but just try with PNR# only.
If you really need FF# , you can make it, put that # into your reaservation. After you get the C+ seat through i check in service, when you check in at airport you can change it with your UA#

Are you sure your returning fligh is 747?
I never take 747 by OZ to SFO recently. It is always777.
One possible thing is your returning flight would be OZ coded UA metal. As long as I know they do code shares for this route. But in this case UA Flight is 777 as well. It has row 11 but does not have upper deck. I tried it last Sept, so there is possibility they changed it recenly though, I doubt it.
So, please check it first. and i will give you advice about seat since I am very familiar both OZ and UA C Class for that route.
I forgot to mention that you need call their VIP only line 9-5 weekdays in korean time.

If it is UA metal, row 9 AB and HJ is reallly good seat. lot of legroom and looks like private cabin.
If it is OZ metal, I like front seat row1 AC and 1 HK. Toilets are back side, so you will not see any trafic fom those seat. Wall side seats(ACHK) is always better than middile seats on 2-3-2 seat configration.
In terms of C seat I like UA better than OZ
