Have anybody flown it on that route yet, or heard what loads are like? YVR is supposed to start later in June too. Methinks they'll be tough routes to fill.
Canjet will have their own little ethnic following. There are lots of Maritimers and NF's in YEG, YYC and YVR that will call CanJet their 'down-home' airline. It gives them a decent start in the markets. General [Archive] - Page 20 - YULAviation:: Hows CanJet doing? Newfies/Maritimers a different ethnicity? :D Luckily, I know what you meant exAC. I'm just surprised the first western route wasn't to YMM, Newfoundland's second largest city. ;)
Westjet loaded up there schedule with cheap seats prior to Jetsgo's demise, the problem is they have to live with those extremely cheap seats they sold in January until the end of July.
I wonder about that. I received a mailer from WS yesterday offering me a further $40 off any YHM flts and double airmiles good until July 31. Either they are trying to head off AC before they start flying from there or are just losing traffic.
I also received an email seat sale this am for seats in June and July.
Very tough - WestJet and Air Canada won't give this route up without a fight :p
I think everybody is pretty much fought out for the time being :) Jetsgo really did alot of damage in the market place, so I think you will see the airlines tighten up the buckets and try to get the yields back to where they should be. Westjet's flights to/from YHM are performing great. Any assumption that the city is "underperforming" is a weak guess at best. If YHM is to be any reasonable alternative to YYZ the price of a ticket must reflect that.[/QUOTE]
I don't think they would do a mailer like that if they were doing "great" in that market. Don't forget, a lot of people were PO'd when they made the move to YYZ

Wow, a bit of panic maybe, I wonder what there 2nd quarter is looking like?? Clive has been sounding alot like an airline person saying they are focusing on retaining market share.
Can their 735s fly YHZ-YYC or even YHZ-YVR? I wonder if that would be worth it. Currently there is only one n/s YHZ-YYC and nil to YVR. Just a thought. Also, slightly OT, but I wonder if Canjet's YOW-YHM service will be hurt when AC enters the market in Sept.
No the 735's cannot fly n/s from YHZ-YYC (maybe YYC-YHZ with a reduced load). It does not fit the LCC model, 1 hour segments with 120 pax on each segment is ideal for the 735.

WestJet Lowers its Fares to and from Hamilton to $20.00 Lower than Toronto
08:30 EDT Wednesday, May 11, 2005
CALGARY, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - May 11, 2005) - WestJet (TSX:WJA) is pleased to introduce lower fares to and from the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.
Beginning May 11, 2005, WestJet's fares to and from Hamilton will be $20.00 lower than fares to and from Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
Sean Durfy, Executive Vice-President, Marketing & Sales said, "WestJet is pleased to offer these discounted fares at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. We are confident that this partnership will stimulate traffic in Southern Ontario for WestJet and Hamilton International."
John Gibson, Vice President, Marketing for Hamilton said, "This initiative offers greater value for those in the Southern Ontario region, and is in line with the other significant values that Hamilton International provides, such as lower parking fees, quick check-in times and a hassle-free experience compared to other airports."

Sure, but look at other LCCs. Westjet's YVR-YYZ flights are certainly above the "ideal" 1 hour stage length. Same goes for transcons on jetblue and Southwest in the states. Of course, if the 735 can't do it, then it can't. I remember CP used to fly their 732s YYZ-YVR all the time, though...could Canjet fly a 732 YHZ-YYC?
Obviously they've done their homework here so I'm really just playing armchair quarterback, but if they're trying to entrench their niche with east coast travellers, then a direct link to the west might be useful. There is plenty of competition on YHZ-YYZ and YYZ-YYC/YEG/YVR but almost nil on direct flights to the west.

In the Canadian airline industry, we talk a lot about serving the YMM-YYT market, but the outcome is that the people of YMM would prefer to drive to/from Edmonton to pick up their flights so that on the way home they can load up the car with merchandise that they buy in Edmonton.

That is much closer targetted than their moves of a year ago or since they started. Westjet did not have the ability to focus in on problem or strategic areas.
The offer you have is unique to one under-performing city. The other offers were likely only available on off peak flights on tuesdays from certain cities. Previously WS offered all seats on all flights on all cities until they were sold out. Their new revenue system allows them to target better and fill in the holes.

Its the through traffic from the east coast that is their base. With targeted marketing and a good schedule they should do very well. They are getting good brand recognition, the brand has been front and center for 5 years now, sometimes the exposure has not been great, but they are still around.
I think this route is going to run just fine. Nice to see competition picking up in the domestic market.

If only that were true. However, I just purchased a YVR-YYZ flight for 3 days from now for $189 (all the flights were at this price) less a $70 travel credit from the Westjet Mastercard. That $189 base fare is about half of what AC has on offer and is generally unheard of with this short of a lead time. It was certainly enough to make me put off the return trip of an award on AC indefinately; 12500 miles ain't worth $110. Last time I flew Westjet was about 2 years ago when they were offering $99 fares on this route. I think this was prior to Jetsgo operating to YVR. So it's rather difficult to place the blame on SG.
Edit to add: My Westjet eticket confirmation went directly to my Spam box. Guess my email feels the same way about them as I do :D

Westjet announced a new sale late yesterday. This new sale is deep discount on the entire network for the remainder of June. e.g. YYC-YVR is down to $79 again. So far AC has not price matched the fares.
I am beginning to think that Westjet has a lot of open seats. June was to have been the first month where Westjet ran down the cheap seats sold during Jetsgo era. Could it be that the visiting friends and relatives market (Westjet and Jetsgo bread and butter) is deciding not to buy the post Jetsgo fare levels?
What dress should i wear for an interview ?
