As a graduate of a foreign medical school that grants an MD degree
that is honored by the United States, one is faced with a huge maze
regarding the USMLE examinations, Internship Applications, and
Residency applications. Most American students are entrenched in
these questions and get guidance from upper-classmen and other medical
peers in their group during their undergrad and medical school years.
They are exposed during 4 to 8 years of "how to proceed along the
path." As a graduate of an EU medical school who only recently was
granted US citizenship, it's kind of like being dropped on the
doorstep of a whole labrynth of one's future. There are many
companies that offer guidance helping one INTO medical school, but
where can one find guidance as to how to negotiate this new maze after
the MD degree is acheived? Most doctors, and universities, when
asked, give vague and broad advice as to how to proceed. But medicine
is very competitive in the United States, so how can one discover the
"dos-and-don'ts" that are elementary to Americans, and totally foreign
to immigrants? What I'm looking for is access to personal guidance
and counseling with someone who can help establish a timeline and
gameplan of all the requirements that must be met and how they should
be met. Can you help find a fee-for-service agency or counselor that
has expertise in this area so pitfalls and common mistakes can be
avoided? Things to be avoided in this search: anything done by a big
company (like Kaplan) were the service is lack and impersonal, and
also avoid generic website help, or book referrals. A face-to-face
with a seasoned expert is preferred. I just don't know how to find
someone, or some service to choose from. New York City-based is
preferred, but not required. I've spoken with many Universities, and
Doctors and they all speak the language of someone who has been
entrenched in the system for so long they only give vague and general
advice. I need someone who can walk through the process with keen
insights to make the path less rocky. I am willing to pay for this
expert help when found, so can you help me find them?
That link you sent from International Med is on the right trail, but
they are more or less a head-hunting firm with their own agenda:
meaning they will counsel you to fit their list of clients who are
paying them to find candidates. Unless we know who their clients are
(maybe it's some desperate place in Gnome, Alaska who can't get any
students to come there? and no major-city hospitals in New York, LA,
Chicago would utilize their services?) we can't judge the transparency
of their services. It's so close to the mark, but at the end of the
day these people work for their "real clients" and are not working for
the student; hence it's like paying a modeling agency to take your
photographs if you know what I mean. It's so close! Please keep
going since you're on the right track!
