YOW AC baggage service: poor reputation for baggage handling in YYZ

  • Within the last 12 months, I have had 2 instances where my luggage originating in YVR (with a connection in YYZ) did not arrive on my flight in YOW.

The Ottawa baggage services desk agent stated that most like reason was that the baggage (even with more than enough connection time - ie more than 2 hrs in both cases) was not handled properly in Toronto, by the baggage handlers there.

Is this reputation justified, or not?

  • AC have lost my bags twice in two years with about 50 flights. In both instances they were personally delivered within about 4 hours, once to a hotel in YUL and the other to my home about 100km from LHR.

However, compared to other airlines that have lost my luggage AC's response has been way above average.

Lost / late bags reminds me of a story when I was on a YYZ-LHR flight last year and the girl in the row in front of me was told by the F/A that one of the two men about to board in her row had an oxygen pack and this was quite bulky. As it was a full flight in Y the F/A said she would look to upgrade this girl to J. The girl was utterly thrilled but just as she had gathered her stuff together to move, a G/A came on board and said to her "Are you Miss XXX" and when she said yes, the G/A said "I'm sorry but we can't let you travel on this flight as your bags have not made the connection. We have re-booked you on the later flight and here is your new boarding pass" and when she looked at it - it was in Y!! I've never seen anyone look so deflated in my life.

BTW the senior F/A on this flight was a afro-carribean girl with very short cropped hair and in her late 40's to early 50's and was quite the most attentive and efficient F/A I have ever seen. She was just brilliant and also very amusing to the Brits on the plane as she has the amazingly posh and "establishment" English accent, like you hear in 1950's films. So "off" was pronounced "orf" and "London" was pronounced Lon-Don as opposed to "Lundun".

Does anyone else flown with this F/A as she is a real credit to AC.

  • "I'm sorry but we can't let you travel on this flight as your bags have not made the connection. We have re-booked you on the later flight and here is your new boarding pass"

Hahaha... If this was policy, I'd never actually be on any flight that I am slated to be on -- at least not on my crazy transatlantic itins...

So, all to say, I have never seen this done before... When was this?

  • I came off LHR-YOW on Thursday last week and my bag was tenth after a 15 minute wait (including customs time).

I was out of there within 20 mins of arrival after going through secondary, but that's a whole different story -- I got a chance to practice my French and it was actually a conversation of laughs with a pretty nice guy.

So, I guess things are improving!

  • The YYZ bagage delay is pathetic. I have stoped taking the AC859 from LHR as it arrives at midnight into Toronto and then after you take the bus from the infield terminal and clear customs I have waited unitl 130am to get the bags!!!! and dont even start with the "priority" tags...its a joke in YYZ.

So, all to say, I have never seen this done before... When was this?

It was around June last year. I know what you mean though as one of the two times a bag did not make it with AC was a YYZ to LHR flight. I arrived at LHR and my name was called out at the gate to go to the AC service desk in T3 baggage hall. It turned out one of my bags had not made the connection but I was not aware of this until arriving at LHR. They told me it had been put on a later flight and would be sent on to my home - which it did later that day.

At the AC desk in the baggage hall I told the story about the girl on my previous flight and his theory was she probably either had just one bag or all her bags had not made it. In this girl's case it seemed there was still plenty of time during the boarding to offload her whilst with mine, one bag was on and not the other. So to offload me would have meant searching the hold for my bag that had made it, so rather than delay the whole plane they just put it on a later flight.

It made sense to me although I always thought no pax bags could fly unaccompanied.

  • ... In all cases bags had priority tags.
See, that's what you did wrong :p As everyone knows, priority tag = last onto the carousel. The tag does make us feel better at checkin, though...

  • except for the mechanicals out of LGA, and them delaying 10 hours in that hole of a terminal to YYZ

  • With YYZ having 3 terminals and construction no wonder the baggage does not connect... lets hope its better when the T1 is finished.

PS LAX is the worst for bagage.

Funny about LAX...when arriving on NZ my bag arrived very quickly (under 15 minutes) and I waited no more than 3 minutes at INS. In retrospect, if they were able to offload bags while they played with the jetway for 40 mins  then perhaps that is on par for LAX (jetway was jammed as someone drove it outside its prescribed area - a mess!).

  • Yeah, but what the hell does three terminals have to do with it?!?

It's not like when AC was only in T2 and T1 that things were better...

  • YOW baggage handling is somewhat lacking as well, so the agents there should be careful about what they say.
YOW makes YYZ look good actually.

I agree though that LHR is probably one of the best places where AC handles baggage very well. Of course, that's if you ignore the dents, scratches, and other "wear-and-tear" damages...

But, that is a LHR problem in general. I have found MAN to be worse.

  • AC Baggage handling is not world class at any airport I have had to deal with checked bags. Very sub-par.

I'll bet you've asked for an upgrade for your luggage, even. ;)

  • Yeah right! Having recently flown on numerous airlines I can attest that bags come off within 10 mins almost without fail and with AC they come off much later than that, often 30+ mins in YVR and YYZ. Oh, AC lost my bags on 2/2 recent legs (and I guess to be fair AS/AA also lost a bag recently but AC did it coming and going!)

  • I seem to be the exception here but when I had priority tags, mine come out first. Actually my priority tags are permanently stuck on my bags by tape. :p I will let you in on a secret. The larger the airport, the slower it takes for the bags to come out (some exceptions of course). :p Another way to ensure your bags come out first - be fashionably late, check in last, like I almost always do, and my bags ALWAYS come out first if there are no connections. :p

One more thing, I really don't understand why 99% of passengers are in such a hurry to get off the plane when you know the bags won't be coming out anytime soon. As soon as the seat belt sign is off, everyone just pops up and then wait for another 10 mins to deplane. I usually stay seated and continue to read or listen to music until everyone gets off and I slowly meander my way down to the carousels just in time for my bags to appear.

  • I love how of 2 bags tagged Priority 3 of 5 times only one comes out in the first batch and the second comes out near the end!! One time in YUL, my bags were the first, and last, onto the caroussel. Does defeat Priority tags!!!
I find AC does well in LHR (one of the few redeeming features of that wretched shopping mall with airport) and NRT -- bags usually coming out, or just about to come out as I leave Immigration. AC is quite mixed in YVR -- somehow I find they do international baggage delivery better than domestic.

Of course, I have found BAs baggage handling to be consistently poor. Even in F and J I have had my bags come out in the middle of Y pax. Recently, NRT-LHR all J pax luggage came out in between F and Y/Y+!!

At least with AC there are a few bright spots!!

  • I think some of this is airport-specific. I recently got back from a trip to Asia on UA and my bags were waiting for me in HKG (within 10 minutes of leaving the plane), while at ORD, it took half an hour for my first bag and over 45 minutes for my last bag to burp out on to the carousel. In all cases bags had priority tags.

Generally I do find that YYZ baggage handling is slow when flying AC (so much for state-of-the-art baggage handling system. Since YYZ is home, I can't comment on connections, but the OP comment would not come as a surprise.

  • Unfortunately, YYZ baggage handling is bad at best.

  • Last trip - YOW/YWG (CRJ) and YWG/YYZ/YOW (320/763), my bag with a priority tage came off FIRST - I was stunned as I can't count the nunber of times where I have had to wait well past most of the other passengers to receive them.

The only down side was that it took 30 mins for the YYZ/YOW bags to be off loaded and sent to the caroussel, but hey, thats better than 45/50 mins right??

I hope they are not teasing me and forcing me to wait longer next time...

You are so right about 859. I love the flight's time of departure but it is so ridiculous when you see all the customs inspectors at T1 leaving work for the night going past all the pax through the exit doors before any of the bags have even arrived on the carousel! :( If you fly 859 don't check any bags. Even if that results in a secondary inspection you will still get out of the airport faster.

  • Unfortunately, YYZ baggage handling is bad at best.
    Generally, I would agree.

However, I had a good experience recently. Arriving late on a flight from the USA (Infield Terminal), the bags were delivered to the customs area (Terminal 2) and then onto our flight home (Terminal 1). This with less than an hour on the ground. I was rather surprised, but credit where credit is due - sometimes they get it right.
