Last week my wife and I were taking the redeye from YYZ-YYT for a Canada Day getaway (the downside of doing one ticket on Aeroplan and one on Air Miles to use up points).
We got to the airport fairly early (which was a good thing as there was no dedicated line to drop off our baggage - kind of defeats the point of checking in online and printing your own baggage task at the self-serve kiosk but whatever). Anyways, by the time we arrived at the gate we still had a good 45 minutes or so by the time our flight was supposed to depart.
Since there was still no plane 20 minutes before departure, we easily figured out we would be somewhat delayed. Eventually the plane turned up and disembarked. Then we learned they were going to have to fix a mechanical problem.
The GA did a good job of explaining what the problem was (an issue with the nose wheel - something I defintely prefer to be fixed before I get on the plane) and keeping us updated on the progress of the repairs.
Eventually, we boarded (about an hour late). Naturally, someone had wandered off during the delay so we had to wait for them to offload their bags. But finally we took off and had a fairly normal flight to Nfld.
When we came in to land, it was quite foggy. We made an attempt but aborted. When the pilot came on and said we were going back to Montreal, we at first thought he was joking and was just going to make another run. But we quickly learned that he was serious as the landing gear went up and we returned to cruising altitude. Despite the unhappiness which this quite naturally provoked, most of the pax accepted that you can't fight the weather. The crew to their credit quickly answered the question most of us were thinking - we couldn't divert to Halifax because they were fogged in as well.
We landed at Montreal without incident (although even there the clouds were quite low and I imagine the plane was running on fumes by this point as it had been over double the expected flight time). Of course the crew had timed out so we had to wait 2 1/2 hrs while a new one was rounded up. But again, being told the reason for the delay made it easier to handle. Finally, we reboarded the same plane (which meant our luggage did actually make it to YYT with us) and took off again. The crew provided free drinks by way of apology for the delay and we finally managed to land in YYT around 13:00 (for a flight scheduled to arrive at 03:15).
All in all, the AC staff handled the delays professionally and I very much appreciated being kept informed of the reasons for the delay. I was especially pleased that the numerous kids on the flight all seemed to take it quite well (not a single crying banshee among them).
Although the delay was somewhat annoying, it actually worked out OK for us (as we had more time to sleep than we thought we would). I just feel bad for the poor people waiting at YYT to pick people up or even worse head out on whereever that plane was going next.
