"Air Canada has been ordered to drop a special surcharge it levies on all tickets to cover rising insurance costs.
In a recent ruling, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) gave the airline until the end of March to drop the surcharge, which is $6 per return ticket. The agency said the charge was supposed to be temporary and it is no longer reasonable.

The "ever increasing use of surcharges limits consumers' ability to compare airfares, as the advertised price does not usually disclose the true price that the consumer will have to pay at the time of purchase," the agency said in the ruling.

I think airlines should be allowed to add on any surcharges they like. I also think there should be a sales tax on surcharges, of, say, 25,000%.
I think SG invented that surcharge and they deserve more attention - their tickets always seem to be advertised far from any real price. I can't think of any other purchase that has such a high fraction of the final cost devoted to surcharges. I'm glad to see that a government agency is taking action. Paul Martin was responsible for instituting the security surcharge so I guess he doesn't like the airline to invent its own and take away from the impact.
