VG Airlines is a new Belgian carrier that has taken over a few of Sabena's routes. Their web page (http://www.vgair.be/index2.cfm) advertises a introductory fare of $295 plus taxes for rt travel from Boston or New York to Brussels. (To find the fare, go to their Web page and click Promotions in the nav bar on the left side of the page.)

According to the conditions page, you have to buy you ticket by June 15, begin your trip by June 30, and stay over 1 Saturday night but no more than 30 days.

Their web site mentions an attractive frequent flyer program that features no partners and in which you'll get 1 free rt ticket for every 5 round-trips that you fly.

Still, $295 + taxes for rt to Brussels in June is hardly a bad deal.

  • Quokka and others, mea culpa since I was working on two threads at the same time and got my wires crossed. The problem wasn't that I didn't read this thread but that I was also reading a second one at the same time. Sometimes just too much FT for my simple brain to process.

  • How can you book this ?

i cant seem to find a way to book it.
Can it be booked on their website ?

Anyone know of any good fares LAX-BRU I need to get over there.

    Thanx

  • Wow. It looks like AA has matched this fare and is offering a $295 fare between BOS-BRU and NYC-BRU. Saturday stay required, no advance purchase required (although it's an N fare so whether or not you can find N class on the ORD-BRU leg over the next few days is iffy).

Found it very difficult to find availability on Travelocity or ITN but there seems to be a lot more availability on Orbitz.

  • Travelocity was able to show the $311 base (vs $295 on VG) fare. Checkout the routing below for NYC-BRU (via ZRH and CDG by train).

To be precise, it's a Saturday night stay. I don't see any return N inventory except on 27 June (requiring 22 June departure). Not the best for a run, but if it helps someone, hey knock yourself out! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I found returns via ORD on AA metal (Orbitz), or via CDG on le train (Travelocity).

  • I tried to book this fare on aa.com with appropriate dates found on trevelocity.

However, despite the fact that it originally priced around $360 then after clicking the "continue" button it turned into a whoopping $3600 purchase!!

The next best AA fare was around $1600. It beats the hell out of me how can a fare go up ten times in a second!

It's still useful to hear about such a new airline and its fares for mileage run purposes, even if you have no intention on flying the upstart. For example, the low fares from the upstart seems to have prompted AA to drop their lowest fare between JFK and BRU to $311. That's $311 roundtrip (before taxes) in the peak summer season ... if you can find "N" inventory on AA.

Whoa! Brussels may not be the nicest city in Europe, but comparing it to Newark? No comparison! Agree with the above post...lots of things to see. And if you don't like BRU, Paris is only 2.5 hours away by train.

  • Won't help us US-based travellers, but did a Dream Maps reverse search from BRUssels. Base price to NYC is $197, most of East Coast $213 ($297 w/ taxes), West Coast $306, for travel in Sept and October. If I could find a half way decent fare over there then, it might be worth nesting a trip.

  • Nevermind -- I was repeating info that was already there...

Yes, I found it. They have three different rates: The standard rate, then the "special" rate and the "promotion" rate which is cheaper then the special rate!

Wait a minute.... just think of the moules et frites, Grand Place not to mention quick rail connections to Brugge, Antwerp, Paris, Amsterdam etc, etc. I'm going there in late July and can't wait to return.
PS-- for those of you with 'deeper pockets'--or don't enjoy flying behind the curtin Varig is also selling a Business class ticket JFK-BRU for $2000 r/t.

This can be answered in one word... "BUG"

  • Since the topic of this board is Mileage Runs, I can't imagine flying this new airline for such a purpose, unless most of my travel will be between BOS and BRU. Why? It flies almost nowhere (even after the addition of the not-yet-scheduled LAX connection). It's an untested airline that might not last long, with the resulting FF awards likely becoming worthless. It has no partner affiliations for combining FF miles or using FF miles. It doesn't fit with any of my mileage run goals for achieving/maintaining status or accumulating FF miles (or credits) to use on other trips.

Don't get me wrong. I love Brussels and numerous places I can get to easily on the ground once I get there. And I can envision maybe using this airline occasionally when fares for my favorite airlines are sky high. But otherwise....

  • Just a point on Varig not being useful for mileage runs. It is one of the eligible airlines for the Star Alliance promo for 55555 miles.

Uh, hello? Perhaps reading the thread before posting might help upgrader ... neither the new Brussels-based VG Airlines, nor AA have anything to do with the Star Alliance or Varig.

btw, has anyone flown VG Airlines between JFK-BRU and can report? If I can't find acceptable dates for a run using the $311 AA fare, I'm thinking about flying the inaugural BOS-BRU VG Airlines flight for the heck of it.

Darn. Now I want to go too...
