According to this morning's National Post, police have broken up a ring that double-swiped credit cards at one of the International Improvement Fee counters at YVR. Three people were arrested over the weekend in a scam which was uncovered by a bank credit card issuer that noticed an increase in local charges, alloccuring shortly after their owners had left the country, and the YVR charge appeared.

Police estimate 600 or more card numbers were obtained by the group, employed by the private contractor handling improvement fee collection at the airport. They apparently reswiped cards through a second unit hidden behind the authorized swiping unit. The second unit would store card numbers and other personal information from the stripe, to later be downloaded for programming onto forged credit cards.

  • What is a "second swipe" that reads your card. Is there another machine that does this and how do you make a credit card? Or is it just the combination on CC number and expirey date?

P.S. I am not looking to getting into the CC business. Just trying to educate myself so as to protect myself.

  • I am flying out of YVR tomorrow. I sure as hell won't be paying the AIF by credit card! Anyway, I think they should "haxe dee tax" as Mulroney would say when mocking the Prime Minister. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif How much is the AIF anyway? I seem to be charged different amounts a lot.

  • It's indeed very shocking to hear this. I travel to YVR very frequently and luckily I pay for the AIF through those automated machines. I wonder who those guys are and whether I've actually seen them before.

  • Unfortunately this problem is not limited to credit cards at YVR. There have been longstanding reports of credit cards being copied at restaurants and with illegal transactions showing up in Hong Kong, and use of bogus Interac terminals to record account numbers and PIN.

The sad truth is that you should be especially aware of your credit and debit cards when they are out of your possession.

FWIW, I once had a series of fraudulent transactions made on a Discover card that I only used for pay-at-pump gas purchases.

  • They are swiping the cards through a second swiper - the size of a pager - to record numbers and other information. Apparently that is all that is needed. Best thing is to see where your credit card is going and what is being done to it when out of your hands. Making bogus credit cards in this manner is all too easy which is why there are attempts to make credit cards with embedded chips (France uses this).

  • Of course I don't do this, but one can avoid the AIF by showing a same-day boarding pass to YVR as connection are not taxed.

  • I'm not absolutely certain, but don't the fee collectors work for the same security outfit that do the security/X-ray checks?

  • Another good reason why these fees when they are charged should be paid at time of ticket purchase. This removes the source of temptation.

  • Flyboy... you don't have to worry if you want to pay by CC, just use one of the self serve machine where you swipe your own card.

The AIF is $5 for within BC, $10 for North America (including Hawaii and Mexico) and $15 for anywhere else.
