I've read that sometimes companies will hold the check until after the grace period and then hit you with fees and charges for a "late payment". Is this true? Has anyone had this happen? Our mortgage payment was sent over a week ago and still hasn't cleared the bank, and tomorrow it will be considered late. I'm worried that this is what is happening. Is there anything I can do to stop it from happening right now? Obviously I need to try and send the payment in sooner, but we didn't have the money until DH got paid, and I even sent the check a few days before his direct deposit came in.

If you are in foreclosure and have multiple past dues, the bank doesn't have to accept the payment check. If you are writing about a regular payment, call the customer service number and see if the check was received they should have at least that information. If they have no record cancel the check and make a payment over the phone. It will cost you extra money but will save your credit score. This is a credit card company scam. Pay your credit card bills on-line to defeat it. schedule your payment to be taken out 2 days before it is due. If you don't have the money to make the payment on time you need to stop using credit cards, you are falling into the credit card debt trap my friend. Look up Daveramsey.com from help. I don't think they can hold it like that--I think they credit your account as soon as they get the check from you, they don't wait for it to clear first.
They will definitely charge a late fee if they don't get it in time, even if you mailed it before the due date.
Don't stop payment just yet because if they have it then the check will bounce and they will charge you a fee for that. Call the mortgage company and ask them if they've received your payment...they may have gotten it but it just hasn't cleared your bank yet. IF they don't have it ask them if you can make a payment over the phone and then do the stop payment.
Yes, this is the new thing in credit cards. Yes call the company and get the charges drop, because if you don't they can do a late report on your credit report. Don't do the online fee that nuts
