I believe in giving to the poor and needy. But I don't see any need for the government taking my, (our) money and then deciding what charities to give it to.
I like making those choices for myself.

absolutely. i have limited available funds. the more the government thieves from me the less i have available to donate to charity. if the government only took what it rightfully should from me, something like 1 or 2% instead of the outrageous whatever percentage it is now, then now only would i feel a stronger obligation to give to charity but i would also have more money available to actually make it happen.

I'll give what I can afford. My taxes won't be going up either way, I hope. I live alone and support myself on $15,000 a year. I usually give around $300 a year: all that I can afford. If the cost of living and cost of gas continues to increase, I won't be able to give anything at all.

It doesn't matter how much my taxes go up because the Lord always makes sure I can give. He just wants to see if I will let go of what I have. It's not always in the form of money. I donate all of my resources; money, time, vehicle, advice/counseling, etc.
