| | I'm fairly sure this has been asked and answered before, but I can't find where.
I just booked an AP ticket for myself. I had to pay $76 in taxes. Here is the print out:
FARE 0.00CAD
CA TAX 7.94
XG TAX 1.61
XT TAX 66.74
TOTAL PER TICKET 76.29ACAD
I just looked on Continental and for the same route a reward ticket costs 30.16 (US).
Can anyone tell my why taxes on a 0.00 CAD ticket with AP are so much higher than on a 0.00 ticket with continental?
What is this XT TAX that AP is charging?

If you were flying the other way EWR-YUL taxes would be about $30USD. Free cruise offer:: Are there any port taxes when visiting a foreign country? Brilliant AC move to spin off AP. Keep up the good work.
I just booked transborder star reward.
After all the tax and the agent fee, the total came up to C$106. Really a big surprise to me indeed.
I remember in 03 or 04, it was something like C$35 something.
Exact star reward on United, the tax is U$34.34.
I redeemed a ticket on AC for a friend in March and the taxes came to 0.00 but of course I didn't book with Aeroplan.
See my post HERE
Your guesses are right. The flight is YUL-EWR. So the taxes are higher because of how the US govt views Aeroplan?
my reward starts from a US city to YYZ. Since my acct has a Canadian address, the agent said that it has to charge the Canadian fee. (he didn't disclose if the "US" fee is lower, I suspect it is)
I should have changed my acct to an US address, then request the reward.
For United, it is the same tax (within couple cents) regardless of point of origin.
Anyway, it will be my last AP reward. I have used up all the miles and I do not plan to accumulate more AP miles.
my guess based on the "CA TAX 7.94", is that this is a transborder flight. since AP is now a loyalty program, the US gov't has levied the US transportation tax, and the PFC, which the CO ticket is not subject to.
XT is a total of all other taxes on the ticket, not just one tax. (Most tickets have space for only 3 tax codes in the fare totals boxes and have to break down the taxes in the fare calculation line).
Would need to know your itinerary to be able to hazard a guess at what the XT taxes consist of.
What dress should i wear for an interview ?
