Air Canada chief hopes to weather economic storm with new cross-border routes
Robert Milton, Air Canada's chief executive, is banking on a dozen new secondary routes between Canada and the United States to help the airline fly through a difficult economic period.
Although the U.S. air travel market has slowed considerably, Milton said Tuesday that experience suggests the Montreal-based airline can fill small jets and make a profit by providing direct links so travellers can avoid major travel hubs.

The latest such route, Toronto-Kalamazoo, Mich., began service Monday, while others to be added this month include service between Toronto and Norfolk, Va., Greenville, S.C., and Charleston, S.C., and between Edmonton and San Francisco.

In July, a route will open between Vancouver and Miami and in the fall a Montreal-Las Vegas, Nev., service will be added to routes introduced earlier this year.

Milton, giving an overview of the airline at a transportation conference in New York, said the new services come in the wake of Air Canada's integration with Canadian Airlines, which allowed the dominant airline to free up capacity from its debilitating war with Canadian and deploy it in the more lucrative U.S. market.
