I'm curious what the differences between these are:

    1. 本日 【ほんじつ】 (n-adv,n-t) today; (P)
    2. 今日 【きょう(P); こんにち(P)】 (n-t) today; this day
    (Information from WWWJDIC)

    Thanks.

  • WWWJDIC's example sentences do not clearly (if at all) distinguish between levels of politeness. Both words are simply listed as "today."

You're not making the best use of them. In fact did you actually _look_ at the example sentences? It sounds from "both words are simply listed as" that you're talking about the dictionary entries. :okashii:

If I try the example sentences the first thing I find is that there are (total) 17 sentences for 本日 and several hundred* for 今日. So you already know one important difference between 本日 and 今日.

If you look at the actual content of the example sentences ...

These are both "classical" techniques, so why the difference? Also, another film composer of today, Elliot Goldenthal, has written several different types

It's obvious that all the examples are very polite and generally 'humble'. If you just look for "what word is 本日 translated as" you've missed most of the point of example sentences.

  • Thank you! I totally agree about WWWJDIC, too. >_<

Sorry...i'm new here. I want to know what is WWWJDIC? :p

  • Hehe... yea, as much as I really love WWWJDIC, sometimes it is a bit of a pain that they don't explain words better...
That's what the example sentences are there for.

Anyways, honjitsu = kyou, except honjitsu is more polite. It's like donata vs. dare, watashi vs. watakushi, etc. As far as I know, the usage of both words is identical...

Something easily found with Google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wwwjdic).
