I am okay at setting and bumping, but sometimes I screw up. I can also dig. I CAN'T spike, it's just a timing thing (I am 5'9 and have lots of arm and leg power and a good reach, so I SHOULD be able to spike really well, but my technique is bad.) I also suck at serving. What are some drills that can help my technique in any of these areas? I have a volleyball, a basketball hoop, and a big wall I can hit against. Any drills that have worked well for you or people you've coached are welcome, this is an open question. Thank you so much, I am trying out for volleyball league and if you answer you will have saved my life!

  • I'll try my best, but it would help if I knew what you were doing wrong. Why can't you hit? Many things could be going wrong. You could be too close to the net (they go into the net), you could have bad timing (early= tips of fingers on balls, late= into the net), you may need to snap your wrist (your hits are going out) you could have bad foot work (you dont have a good approach)

Also, it would be good to know what your age is so i can better know your skill level. I can suggest some drills though, but there aren't many i know of that you can do on your own.

For hitting, go to the wall you have to hit against. Now, bounce the ball on the floor at an angle so it hits the wall too. when the ball bounces off the wall you use your hitting hand to hit it on the floor again so it will bounce off the wall. Then, repeat. This drill is kinda explain without a visual, sorry. The idea is to hit it as many times as your can off the wall without stoping. You may have to adjust your position foward or backward depending on how hard you hit it.

Another hitting drill thats good, is also just working on your approach. Over and over til its perfect.

I would recomend some serving drills, but i really would need soem more information to be helpful at all. Are you hitting net (not enough power, too much top spin, contact is not high enough)? Are your balls going deep and out (too much power, too high contact)? Are they going out to the sides (hips not straight, follow through isnt straight)? Is your serve just not where you want it to be (too soft, easy)?

Hope i helped at all :] Good luck with your tryouts!!!! I hope you make the team!

  • With the wall, serve against it for as long as you can stand it every day. That's how i got my serve. For hitting, hit the ball down against the wall so it bounces down, hits the floor, hits the wall and flies back up. Then hit it again. Then for passing, toss it against the wall and bump it up. It's hard to explain, so i hope this has helped you. Good luck! :)
