it isn't such a bad name. in the philippines where i come from, everybody gets a pet name from the neighborhood. they can call you fatty or skinny, but that don't mean they hate you or something. it's just the easiest way to remember you or distinguish you from somebody else. if you're fine with the name, and your dog responds to that name, i say keep it. it's not mean. it's kinda cute. maybe you should call your next dog doc for a change, though :)

It doesn't matter so long as you're comfortable calling your dog that. Remember that's going to be on any registration papers with the vets and everything. So as long as you don't think too many people will give you weird looks when you're recalling your dog to you at the park, it's a good name to use. =)
I personally think it's kind of cute, and not that bad of a connotation comes to mind when it's used.

A good test of whether you will like the dogs name in a few weeks/months/years time is to yell the name of the dog outside where strangers can hear you, if you aren't embarrassed to call out "Dopey, here Dopey!" then go for it :)
As for suggestions, how about Joey, sounds similar :)
If whom you adopted him off has been calling him Dopey, he will probably already be accustomed to this name. Just don't use a toilet command such as 'GO PEE'...
