Why do people who 'sign' on TV use those strange facial expressions?

Welcome to:zjsk.com

  • Are they part of the 'sign'? Does everyone use the same gurning expression?

Why can't you choose to have signing on your screen or not, like you can with subtitles? They are necessary for deaf people but a distraction for hearing people.

  • Although I am not hearing impaired I do lip read as I have a profoundly deaf aunt. The careful mouthing of the words and the expression in that mouthing is a vital part of getting the meaning over. I don't find the signer on tv intrusive. One of the music channels has signing on that where the person signing even moves to the beat etc I think it's brilliant.

  • You should have watched it when it was on without them. They are mouthing the words exaggerated, so the deaf people can lip read too. Have you never seen deaf people talking?

  • That's one of the most selfish questions I've ever heard on here.

Edit. Don't you realise that by using the phrase 'Gurning expression' that you come across as a very selfish person indeed, the proper term to use to ask such a question is exaggerated facial expressions, Not Gurning!
Then again most people know this (without having to ask) that exaggerated facial expressions are part of signing communication.

  • The facial expressions you refer to are actually a grammatical part of the language - they can signify a change in topic, a question, or they can change the sign they are using to signify that something is bigger or thinner. In fact they are just as important to the language as what is happening with their hands.
Whilst I understand that it is distracting for you having an interpreter on the screen please remember that the percentage of programmes that have an interpreter is tiny and most of these programmes are on in the middle of the night. The software to have the interpreter as an optional part of the programme is not available otherwise I'm sure they would have it as similar to subtitles.
You are lucky that you can access any programme, any time, including the radio. Deaf people pay the full TV licence just like you but can access about 5% of what you can.

  • I am not deaf but I assume if you think about it, just signing without showing any facial emotion would be similar to a hearing person listening to someone with no inflection in their voice and no hand gestures.

I do agree, however, that having part of the screen taken up with someone signing can be very distracting.

  • Are they trying to mouth the words at the same time, perhaps?

  • Have you no heart?

  • Heres my question?
Why would someone get bored with doing IT for 10 years?
