Noticed Northwest Airlines 747 on far south ramp YYC today (Sunday 12th), smoke pouring from port inboard engine 5pm local?

Anyone have any 411 on this? Empress?

  • They think it was some sort of 'security threat' that cause the engine to smoke so they had to isolate the plane?

    'Cuz it's winter time? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

  • The NWA 747 wasn't the only plane suffering at YYC, a Monarch A330 also had engine problems and sat the whole weekend here until an engine could be ferried over yesterday.

Because it was way too hot last week. Wasn't it almost 20 degrees C? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

If that's not it, then blame BB. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

  • I saw it facing East, near the end of the runway that runs East-West, while I was leaving the airport at 4:20 local time today.

I thought it might be on the taxi way and believed it was leaving, but looks like it was probably just arriving.

I was told they instructed the aircraft to stay on one of the taxiways and the mechanics will take a look at it there. (So passengers don't have to deplane & clear customs) Apparantly it couldn't be fixed so it'll be overnighting in YYC.

  • Customs/immigration issues? I heard they were trying to start it up on the tarmac but it failed... if they hook it up to a jetway and let people off, then they'll have to clear customs and claim their lugguage.

  • Ok, an update for you. They actually didn't leave YYC! They were trying to leave at 5:30pm and didn't work out. So they'll be overnighting and will try again tomorrow morning.

(Sorry for the wrong info about the plane took off for NRT already)

  • Engine problem. Landed at YYC and got it checked out. There were smoke coming out of one of the engines (as pointed out by you).

Aircraft was declared safe and it took off at 5:30pm and continued onto NRT.

  • So far, all I know is that's NW019 on its way to NRT and got diverted to YYC.

  • Empress -

Talked with someone I know who works at the airport. Smoke coming out of the engine wasn't the only thing, and there was a reason why the plane was out at the tarmac [and not attached to a jetway]

... I'll let you think up the rest.
