    ==================

Air Canada introduces U.S. Customs pre-clearance in Canada for all Honolulu and Sydney flights. Effective Nov. 23, customers will pre-clear US customs in Toronto and Vancouver when traveling to Honolulu and Sydney. As a result customers traveling from Toronto will check-in at Terminal 2, and customers traveling from YVR will check-in at the transborder area. Pre-clearance will facilitate transfers for passengers connecting in Honolulu to Sydney.

    YAY!
wonder if we can stay in a sterile area in HNL (like the old days) or still have to be processed through Security?

  • Right now, you disembark, take the shuttle to the terminal, go through INS, pick up your bags, go through customs, go through the check-in area, go through security, and then go back to the departure gate, which in the case of the YVR flight is the same one you arrived at because it is the same aircraft. It's all pretty straightforward really. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

  • So, what is the procedure CURRENTLY?

The travel agents keep telling me that it's only an hour's wait. Do you have to go pick up your bags and clear US customs even when your destination is SYD? Or, do you get to sit in the plane and wait until everyone disembarks? It's the same plane traveling all the way down to SYD, isn't it?

  • I can't see that you will have to go through the BS again at HNL.

If you have cleared in YVR there is no reason to go through again!...

There must be something at HNL to keep you sterile...I guess we loose the nice lounge and duty free shoping at YVR now if you have to go through the US side...

  • Did it mention whether direct YYC-HNL or
YYC-OGG flights will pre-clear in Canada this
winter? That would be nice. (Except then no
    duty-free on the aircraft)

  • It's still stupid to make SYD bound customers go thru US customs.

The old procedure was fine if they didn't make SYD bound pax go thru customs. Why do they always like to make things so complicated.

muskoka - as far as I know, this applies to AC 33 and AC 27 only.

  • Will this bring the transfer time back 50 mins..or so..

    Will the YVR departure change..?

I have some tickets I would like to change.....a later departure works better with my plans... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

And quite well timed...I find you just have enough time to go through all the steps to walk on the plane and have the door close behind you. Good exercise too http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • Btw, the change in departure time for then HNL-SYD is not because of the new customs procedure. The earlier departure time only applies between Nov 23 - March 2 when AC is running 744s on this route.

  • My last trips through (two and three weeks ago) if you were on AC 33 from YVR or AC 34 to YVR, you didn't have to claim your bags. If you changed from/to 27/28 you had to claim your bags and re-check them. It all seemed much smoother than the last time i went through HNL (jan 02). Also, AC had started using the gate right beside customs, (both times I went through) so there was no ride on the Wiki-Wiki bus. Oh, how I miss that. This did mean, however, that we had to walk all the way down and around the terminal to use the "lounge", and then walk all the way back.

Kudos once again to the HNL concierge staff, from my experience they're the best in the system.

I had intended to post a full trip report (syd-hnl-yyz-yqg-yyz-yvr-hnl-syd), but there were no highs or lows on the flights - pretty steady service. I was flying economy on reward tickets, so my status wasn't showing anywhere either. (we did get one op-upgrade on one of the long segments though). These were my first, and will be my last, AC flights this year. After this i collapse into oblivion as a basic member (4 years of SE gone..) unfortunately Qantas platinum still doesn't stand up to AC SE..

  • YVR departure time remains the same.

HNL-SYD will go from 12:25am to 11:55pm effective Nov 23.

  • Before the days which they make you go thru US customs, they usually open a door for you to enter the departure area (so you go thru there instead of up the escalators). They'll have US customs people at the gate randomly picking people for grilling session.

There's no need to have a sterile area, they just have to let you into the international departure area because if you want to exit from there, you'll have to go thru US customs.

  • Gee, I will really miss: the shuttle bus to the main terminal, that long trek through INS, then up to the check in area, another long wait in line to clear security again, and finally the ride back to the gate! But will we be able to get to the ad hoc MLL near the HNL departure gates if the transit/hold area is kept sterile?

  • and MrsCA leaves for SYD from YYZ on Nov 21st.....oh well...

I think these will pre-clear as all Hawaii flights ex-YVR have, to my knowledge, always pre-cleared except the one that continues to SYD.

  • While a good move in response to the silly US INS directives this will not eliminate the Honolulu shuffle on SYD origin flights.
